| EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION How would you interpret the following statements? Military Intelligence. Charlie had jumbo shrimp for dinner. George and Tom had always been friendly enemies. While it is essential for all successful people to communicate effectively, more often than not the most common barrier within corporate organizations is unsuccessful communication. As the above oxymorons suggest, illusive communication can be fun but not necessarily informative. Each person reading those statements can arrive at a different conclusion. How to overcome and move beyond our personal influences is the focus of communication training. The following characteristics contribute to our perception of what a person is saying, therefore, influencing our behavior. When we are able to accept our differences and appreciate the differences in others, our ability to exchange and accept critical information will result in a stronger more interdependent organization. The following communication influences are just a sample of personal and physical barriers to creating a truly integrated environment.
All of us come to each situation in life from a different perspective, therefore our understanding and appreciation of the issue being communicated can, and very often is, different. These differences can cause major blocks in an organization's growth and damage the credibility of the message. PROCESS The first step in the process is to identify the specific barriers to the communication process. When we understand a person's frame of reference, their expectations or realize that cross gender communication is very often misunderstood, it is easier to formulate a solution. A thorough understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal relationships will enhance the exchange of information to the benefit of all involved. After identifying the specific barriers, the individual(s) work with a specialist on how to improve their communication skills. The length and depth of this process is dependent on the needs of the individual and the organization. This section can include a taped interview, which is reviewed by the trainer and the individual to assess body language, attitude and how questions are answered. |
