Tips for Using the Asset of Age to Find Work

Inventory your skills and abilities—These are the tools you have for sale. Clearly understand what they are so that you can position them as the solution to problems that become the basis for opportunities. An opportunity is defined as 1) a problem that some person or organization has, 2) your skills as the solution and 3) a fit between you and the person, firm or situation.

Identify your gifts and talents—These qualities make you uniquely you. They are the values and principles that govern your life. They are qualities such as commitment and dependability. And they are your special characteristics that can only be gained through life experience. Maturity and wisdom have value in the workplace if they are taken where they are needed and appreciated.

Reconnect with all of your friends, contacts and acquaintances—As you seek to find the right opportunity, recognize that people become the conduits, bridges and linkages that will move you along a continuum to a place when you can contribute, be happy and earn a proper reward. You are really in the chemistry business; the business of finding situations where you will be appreciated for who and what you are.

Use the power of interpersonal relationships
—If you become committed to meeting with people on a regular and consistent basis, you will be guided along an invisible path toward your goal. Work hard to overcome discouragement when things don’t seem to happen as soon as you expect them to. Each person that you see will be another step toward finding the right place for you. Enjoy people and they will enjoy you.

Succeed with interest, empathy and understanding
—Becoming sincerely interested in others will help you build effective relationships that will result in others seeking to assist you in your mission. In truth, you are not looking for a job, you’re looking for work. And empathetic listening will cause people to trust you and to share their problems, issues and concerns, which become the foundations for opportunities you seek.
